So, maybe it’s not that cool to be a queen?

This video already has over 170,000 views.

We know that Prince Charles is next in line for the throne, but when his reign is done, Prince William may get his chance. Kate Middleton makes being a duchess seem effortless, but what about graduating to been queen? We’ll let you know some strange things that will happen if she ever takes the throne.

Royal title

We know her current title is Duchess of Cambridge, but what about if Prince William becomes king? Many people assume that naturally, Kate would become queen, but it doesn’t work that way.

It turns out the royal family is pretty particular about the whole biological aspect of the ruling. You’ve probably noticed the husband of Queen Elizabeth is called Prince Philip, and that’s because he doesn’t have royal blood.

It’s likely if William becomes king, Kate would simply be known as Princess Kate. However, there is a chance Kate could be given the title of Queen Consort, which means she only has her powers because of the position of her husband.

Royal fish

There are definitely some big perks to being the queen, especially if you’re a fan of aquatic animals. Under the law, whales, sturgeons, and other ocean creatures belong to the monarchs as long as they’re a certain distance from shore.

During the reign of King Edward II, this statute was first enacted. It declared that the king would own the vast majority of the creatures, but the queen would have rights to its tail.

You’re probably wondering what on earth Kate Middleton would want to do with a giant whale tail, and that’s a fair question. A long time ago, she would be able to use the bones in order to fashion her corsets and other items.

Camilla

We discussed earlier that being queen consort, in which your power is dependent on your spouse, differs from being queen regent which means you have the power of your own.

If Prince Charles takes the throne, Camilla will become either a princess or a queen. However, should Charles pass away first, Camilla will not have any claim to the throne and won’t be able to rule in his absence. Instead, she’ll be severely demoted and have to watch her stepson and daughter-in-law take the throne. This could make already strained family relationships even more so.

Engagements

Many people wonder what exactly it is that the royal family does all day? You might be surprised to know that all of their royal ceremonies and hosting duties take up a ton of time. At one point, Prince William even had to retire from his job as a pilot in order to help out more with his familial obligations. If Kate becomes queen, she’s going to have to expect a marked increase in her social calendar.

In 2015, Queen Elizabeth carried out 306 engagements across the U.K. and 35 abroad. In contrast, between William, Kate, and Harry they were able to do 198 engagements locally and 94 abroad.

Kate Middleton effect

Even though she’s “only” a duchess right now, we all know the Kate Middleton effect is a real thing. The instant she’s spotted wearing something, it sells out in the blink of an eye. Some experts believe her clothing choices effect the fashion industry to the tune of $1.3 billion per year. If her effect is so powerful at the moment, imagine how much more potent it will become when her husband is king.

Queen Elizabeth is known for her big hats and bright colors, and it remains to be seen if Kate will keep her own classic style in the future, or continue to evolve.

Succession

If Kate and William take the throne, everyone currently in line will move up a spot. Currently, Prince Charles is next in line, followed by Prince William. But when Prince William becomes king, his children will be that much closer to sitting on the throne someday. Kate and William’s oldest son George would be next, followed by their daughter Charlotte, and son Louis.

Thanks to a newly changed rule, daughters are no longer forced to abdicate their spots in line in favor of their brothers.

Reluctant ruler

To many of us, being a member of the royal family seems exciting and glamorous. Bit it’s also a role with a ton of responsibility which only increases the higher up you are. If you’re sitting at the top, you are actually quite confined to your position.

According to Prince Harry, nobody in his family really desires to be king of queen; they simply view it as a familial duty that must be fulfilled.

So If Kate ends up being queen, don’t imagine that this is something she has hoped and dreamed for her own life. It’s far more likely she will need to learn to deal with all of the new pressures and challenges when she reluctantly accepts the role.

Charity

When members of the royal family aren’t fulfilling social obligations, they fill much of their time with various charitable works. Not only is this something which is expected of them, but it’s also a fulfilling way to engage with the world around them.

Members of the royal family are expected to stay out of political matters, but they can still donate their time, money, and fame to causes that they find important. Charity has always been something extremely important to both Kate and William. When Kate is queen, you can expect her favorite causes to get even more attention.

Devastating implications

It’s never easy to lose a member of your family, but when your family is comprised of royalty it can have far-reaching effects. When Princess Diana passed away, the following week saw a 33.7% increase in the number of suicides of women in England and Wales. Overall, the rate increased 17.4% in the month following Princess Diana’s funeral.

Kate has been part of founding a charity called the “Heads together” which focuses on mental health issues. Since this is something she is passionate about, we can only imagine the sadness and guilt she will feel if a family member’s passing causes such a disturbing trend.

Degree

Should Kate Middleton become the queen, she will also make history. She will be the only female British monarch to hold a degree. Back in 2005, she graduated with a degree in History of Art from the University of Saint Andrews. That’s where she met her husband, Prince William, but she didn’t let her new romance distract her from finishing her schooling. This will make her the most highly educated British monarch in all of history, which is a pretty incredible thing to be known for.

Royal warrants

Some companies pay big bucks for celebrities to endorse their products. But imagine being able to put a note on your products which indicates it’s used by royalty! The queen is able to hand out royal warrants that state something is good enough for her to use. Over the course of her many years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth has handed out many.

We know that the Middleton effect can be a huge boon to fashion brands, but now Kate’s power of persuasion will be even more intense. This could mean a huge boon to some companies, but a bust for others.

Buckingham Palace

Currently, the duke and duchess of Cambridge live in the lovely Kensington Palace. But becoming royalty means getting a major upgrade in your living quarters. They’ll be moving into the much larger and more stately Buckingham Palace. This means that they’ll be right on location when they need to host formal dinners and events. But of course, Buckingham Palace is a major tourist destination, so this also means dealing with a decrease in privacy. Imagine living somewhere that regularly has u to 400,000 visitors per year!

Only time will tell if Kate will decide to fill her place with cosgis like Queen Elizabeth did.

In addition to being the Queen of England, Kate Middleton would also be the monarch of the royal family. That’s no small role, and it will affect her job description when it comes to being a mother. Most people want their parents’ approval when it comes to selecting a spouse, but in the royal family, it’s essential. In order for them to marry Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle respectively.

This means if Kate is queen and one of her kids wants to get married, she will have the final say over whether or not the marriage takes place.
Although the royal family is known for its rigid rules, they have actually relaxed quite a bit in recent years. It’s now possible to get a divorce or marry someone of a different religion. But if you find yourself sitting on the throne, you had better stick to being Anglican. That’s because the reigning monarch is also head of the church of England, which is an Anglican church. There was a time when it was forbidden to marry someone who was Catholic or raise your children as Catholic. Now it’s possible, but it means that the non-Anglican spouse or children won’t be able to rule at any point in time.

Interviews

It’s not uncommon to see members of the royal family being interviewed, but have you ever noticed the Queen is never one of them? In the decades she has spent on the throne, she has never once given a one on one in-person interview. There are many reasons for this, such as the fact that an unscrupulous reporter may ask a question which would embarrass the crown.

Kate Middleton may feel comfortable talking to the press now, but she will probably end up following Queen Elizabeth’s lead on this one. She can still give speeches and release statements, but interviews will likely be a thing of the past.

Royal Christmas speech

Most families have a treasured set of Christmas traditions, but few are as elaborate and rigid of those in the royal family. One thing many people look forward to each year is the royal Christmas speech given by the reigning monarch. it’s not unusual for them to discuss events within their own family, and include footage of or appearances by family members. This means that Kate will likely end up helping her husband with his speech, or making an appearance in it herself.

Giving a speech is an honor for sure. But it must also be stressful to deliver a proper address to so many people when you’d rather be opening Christmas presents.

Salary

Many people wonder how it is the members of the royal family earn income. They have a ton of properties and business investments, and each is able to pay themselves a handsome salary. Right now, it’s estimated that Kate Middleton takes in about $3 million per year, but this will rise dramatically if she becomes queen.

The reigning monarch gets income from a trust called the “Crown Estate”. Currently, the queen is able to draw about $97 million per year, which is quite the salary! We can’t say for sure what the amount will be when Kate is queen, but it will most likely be a huge increase from what she earns now.

Security

We all know the royal family has to deal with some pretty strict security measures. But when Kate Middleton moves into Buckingham Palace, she’s going to have to deal with an extremely enhanced security force compared to what she’s used to.

Royal family members including Prince Andrew and even the Queen herself have been accosted by security guards who failed to recognize them at first. The Palace is a target for thieves, and security breaches do happen from time to time. This adds a stressful element to the joy of living in a lavish palace.

The Middletons

Among the many powers, you have as king or queen is the ability to grant people titles. Many people agree that it’s only a matter of time before Kate gives her parents honorary titles after William ascends to the thrones. they’re the grandparents of princes and a princess and are close with both William and Kate. It’s frankly unusual that they haven’t already been given titles by the current queen.

Some experts believe Michael and Carole Middleton will be given the titles of earl and countess when Kate is queen. Her siblings James and Pippa may also get titles of their own, such as viscount James and lady Pippa.

Red boxes

If you thought being queen was all dinner parties and speeches, think again. It also involves a simply staggering amount of paperwork. The queen needs to know what’s going on with parliament and the governments of their commonwealth countries. Not to mention all of the current events happening all over the world. Each day she receives red boxes filled with paperwork that she has to peruse.

When it’s their turn, William and Kate will be the ones to take over the infamous red boxes. Going through boxes of paperwork on a daily basis is probably one of the least glamorous parts of being royalty, but it has to get done.
